Pietro Bembo's Historia contains many of the author's Latin works, including a history of Venice from 1487 to 1513 commissioned by the Council of Ten. Book VI gives an account of Spanish and Portuguese exploration in America, cited as a cause of Venice's declining economy. The Historia describes Columbus as "a man of sharp intellect, who traversed many immense regions and much of the ocean" (leaf 82 recto). "The human spirit," Bembo concludes, "continually seeks after new experiences."
